Time lapse Apps

Dan Kerr on iLapse App

Just released is a new Time Lapse video creator App, iLapse which claims to "Capture time the easy way…for iPhone/iPad and iPod Touch." I asked iPhoneographer Dan Kerr – usually more at home with his Macro Lenses – to dive in and see just how easy capturing time was.

If you make your own videos and would like to share them please see the end of this article

"iLapse is a time lapse video creation tool that has just hit the market. It is my first sojourn into this style of photography and after a few short experiments I am eager to try it out some more.

iLapse is fairly user friendly with options that are mostly self explanatory. There are three options of frame rate, how many frames you want to take and the interval between frames is between 0.5 seconds and 20 seconds. I will be interested to see what a prolonged time lapse will do to the batteries. The longest video you can make is just under 7 minutes. I tried a few 10 second HD videos that took a few hours to complete and I saw no massive drop in battery power on the iPad.

On the downside it would have been useful to have manual input of frame options rather than just a scroll bar, there is no exporting other than camera roll and the info section provides no instructions to help the novice. I also could not see any effect on my tapping the screen to set tone and exposure, let along focus as is mentioned on the iTunes description. I was a bit miffed that the iTunes link to Support simply takes you to an advertisement with the same description again. No forum. All in all, with the right conditions, plenty of time and good subject matter this is a good starter app for your first steps into time lapse photography.

Below is a short (and artistically barren) video I took of the sun setting. Try it out yourself and send in the results."
